° [Bagnold, Enid] - Origo, Iris - Images and Shadows: portrait of a life. photo. plates; publisher's cloth and d/wrapper. reprinted, 1971. *with a contemp. 9 line inscription by Enid Bagnold (to Alicia Scott - unnamed) explaining that the book had been (earlier that year) a present to herself from John Gielgud; he had headed the cast, with Ralph Richardson and Anna Massey, of the play 'The Last Joke', at the Phoenix Theatre the previous year. His dated signature and a 6 line tipped-in note above Enid Bagnold's on the front free e/p.; sold with 2 other inscribed copies of Bagnold's books to the same recipient 'Two Plays' (reprinted 1951) and Four Plays (1970). *Enid Algerine Bagnold (1889-1981) British novelist and playwright; well-known as the author of 'National Velvet' (1935), filmed in 1944 with the young Elizabeth Taylor; her major stage success 'The Chalk Garden' (1955) was filmed in 1964 (with Edith Evans and Deborah Kerr). In 1920 she married Sir Roderick Jones, Chairman of Reuters, living in Sussex at North End House, Rottingdean (near Brighton), previously the home of Sir Edward Burne-Jones. The recipient of the gift was a Brighton friend.
